Netinstall with KDE fails with login message "Failed to load session 'ubuntu'"

Help! After a positive initial experiment with Trisquel + KDE = Triskel, I wanted to make a clean install that corrected a few of my misunderstandings from the first install. In both cases I used the netinstall version so I could select KDE.

The new installation appears to succeed and boots to the login prompt like the first installation; but now as soon as I log in I get the message "Failed to load session 'ubuntu'" and the only option presented is to log out. I thought at first I had failed to install something by not checking all the options for things I didn't understand when the netinstall asks you to choose packages.

So I installed a third time, choosing every option presented except the Trisquel desktop environment, selecting the KDE environment instead. The same thing happens. Even the Failsafe option on login just flashes a console window for half a second and immediately logs me back out.

Any ideas? My desktop is quite out of sorts over this whole thing; thankfully the netbook has kept its head.

Isn't there a selection of "sessions" to choose from (at the graphical login screen)?

Unfortunately not. I'm currently reverted to Kubuntu because I can't get Triskel to run. 8-(

What did you precisely do? You should have done the NetInstall and then 'sudo apt-get install triskel' (and, if you wish, 'sudo apt-get install triskel-recommended'). Is that it?

The NetInstall has an option near the end to select the KDE environment. Selecting that option worked the first install, but failed the next two times.

Something weird is or at least was definitely happening. I started to suspect disk problems when two Triskel installs and two Fedora installs failed in succession, though both had worked previously. Then I tried Ubuntu and it seemed to work, so I tried Kubuntu and so far it hasn't burped. I'm still feeling like the situation is fragile because I installed three times from the same CD for both Triskel and Fedora with an initial success followed by two failures on the same day.

Maybe Mercury was retrograde, or maybe I still have a hardware problem. I'm doing lots of backups and prepping for another attempt with Triskel. Right now the desktop is at least running.

Thanks for your help and advice! I've got a little way to go before things straighten out but I'll get there with all the assistance available here on the forum!

Check the SMART parameters for your HDD. If they look bad, it's likely to die soon. If they look good, you really don't know. (Google published a study with some 100,000 disks and this was their conclusion.)

Nobody ever regretted backupping.
