Caja shows file "type" based on the extension at the end of the filename, both when listing files in a directory or in "properties" of a file. Is there a way only using the graphical interface to check the contents for the file with the file command? Asking because my aunt is using xsane to scan photos, and it seems that it does not automatically adjust the file name to the selected type, so she did not understand why she couldn't see a number of photos in gthumb, which I found using the file command in terminal were actually PDF files.

An option could be not to use file extensions at all. File types will be determined based on file data instead, and pdf files will show the correct icon.

NB: On Trisquel 11, trying to open pdf files from the Recent Document list in the Places menu fails if their name does not include the .pdf extension. They show up with the application/octet-stream icon instead of the application/pdf icon. They still have the proper icon in Caja and open fine from there.
